In 1917, Enugu acquired township status and was called Enugwu-Ngwo, but in 1928, the city was renamed Enugu due to the rapid expansion towards areas owned by other indigenous communities.
Generally, Enugu, also called 042, is a beautiful place to live. I can say that much as I was born and brought up in one of the cheapest places to live in Enugu. Abakpa– A place where the cost of living is relatively low, with different characters and personalities.
I grew up in a neighborhood with many children; it was always fun when everyone returned from school or work in the evening. I attended Queens School Enugu, One of the best government schools in Enugu. The school is in Obiagu, another rugged place in Enugu.
In fact, it’s worth mentioning that places like Abakpa, Obiagu, Emene, and ugbo odogwu are tagged “the slum,” However, I think the difference is the case now because a lot of have changed over the years, but not everyone’s opinion though.
What You Should Know Before Coming To Enugu
Before setting sail to any location, you should know some basic things about your destination, as this information will help you adjust easily to your new environment. Here are some of the things to keep in mind before coming down to Enugu:
1. Transportation
Commuting to different locations in Enugu is quite easy due to the availability of tricycles, popularly called keke napep, buses and taxis. You can always use Google Maps to locate your destination in places like Trans-Ekulu, New Haven, Independence Layout, G.R.A., etc., but asking a human for directions is a better option for some other remote places.
There are various transportation parks in Enugu. However, one of the main parks is called Holy Ghost Park. Named after the Holy Ghost Cathedral, this park houses different transportation companies. You can get to any part of Enugu from this park and also other states in Nigeria.
2. Communication
Communicating with people in Enugu will be a lot easier for you when you know basic phrases in the Igbo language because Enugu people love communicating in their local dialect in the market, schools, place of work, in the streets, etc.
But even if you don’t know any phrase in the Igbo language, you can still survive in Enugu because people here enjoy teaching non-indigenous one or two Igbo phrases in a fun way.
3. Housing
When searching for a place to live in Enugu, confirm that the house has an alternative water supply, like a G.P. tank for filling in water from water tankers, or you can get one for yourself.
Enugu is known to have water scarcity, especially during the dry season, and its primary source of water is well water. So do well to check water availability, and don’t just believe the house agent mindlessly.
Also, living in an apartment with prepaid meters is better to avoid excess electricity bills. Estimated bills can be shocking sometimes because they are unstable and more expensive.
4. Food
Enugu is a city blessed with different mouth-watering local delicacies. Ensure that you do not starve your taste buds of gourmet meals when you are in 042. Many restaurants are there for you in whatever location you find yourself.
If you are the type that prefers cooking to eating out, there are markets where you can readily get foodstuffs of your choice at affordable prices. Markets like Garikki, Abakpa market, Ogbete, Afia Nine, Mayor market, etc. You can get whatever you need from these markets, both perishable and non-perishables.
5. Nightlife
Enugu has a beautiful view, especially at night; there are a lot of fun places to de-stress, clubs, bars, restaurants, etc. It is fun, especially during the weekend when there are a lot of activities and shows to see.
It is worth mentioning that public means of transportation like tricycles (Keke) and minibuses stop by 9 pm. So, if you plan on staying out till late at night, it’s a good thing to have your ride, or you can use a taxi, but be security cautious either way.
6. Security
Enugu is a peaceful and calm city, but notwithstanding, there is still insecurity in some places. It’s advisable to be cautious and alert at all times. Don’t go to lonely places at night; be mindful of pickpockets, especially at motor parks or crowded areas like the markets.

Also, there are shopping malls in strategic places that you can go to, not just for shopping but also for relaxation, as some of these malls house a cinema, e.g. Polo Park shopping mall, popularly called Shoprite.
Foods in Enugu
When you talk about Enugu, you talk about local mouth-watering delicacies, including okpa (Bambara nut), moi moi oka (Steamed Corn Pudding), Ukwa, nkwobi, Achicha, fiofio and the master of them all ‘Abacha.’
I remember walking through a broken bridge on my way back from getting Abacha. It was after school; my friends and I usually take lessons at W.T.C. from Queen’s School Enugu following a shortcut.
On our way back, someone introduced us to a new track that was shorter; when we got there, we discovered it was a bridge with a broken railway track. Unfortunately for us, there was no going back because we had trekked a far distance, so we had to go through the bridge, one step at a time. It was a scary experience for me.
Thank God we all passed through unharmed. How will I explain to my God that Enugu Abacha was why I left the world before my time?
But truthfully, I never got tired of eating local delicacies in Enugu. It was and still is the truth.

This restaurant is a go-to place when you are looking to grab a tasty lunch. It is located at 7B, Park Avenue, behind Polo Mall, G.R.A. Enugu; customers troop in and out of this restaurant due to its delicious meals.
3. Ntachi osa
Ntachi Osa offers different varieties of African and continental dishes. It is an excellent place to unwind and enjoy homely delicacies. They have made a name for themselves, considering their customer base in Enugu.

In Enugu, the cost of living depends on the area in which you are staying. Places like Abakpa, Emene, Camp, Obiagu, and Ugwu Aaron etc., have a low cost of living. You can get cheap accommodation, markets to buy things at a more affordable rate, and schools with lower tuition fees.
When it comes to areas like New Heaven, Independence Layout, G.R.A., Centenary City, Trans Ekulu, Thinkers Corner, etc., the cost of living is high; most high-class citizens reside there.
Things are expensive in these areas, ranging from house rents, shop rents, school fees, and even restaurants. So, if you plan on residing in Enugu, consider your pocket when choosing where to stay.

In Enugu, there are different hotels; most are home away from home due to their ambience, hospitality and good food. Some of these hotels that offer accommodation and relaxation for guests and luxury seekers include but are not limited to the following;

Enugu is a calm and safe city with many fun activities, even at night. Though it’s less bustling at night than in places like Lagos state, but it’s still fun. I always enjoy going to a place called “another level” in Abakpa because of the Pammy Udubonch show every Sunday evening.
I forgot to mention that Enugu people are great dancers. They are very good at their cultural dance, and I have learned many of their dance steps growing up.

Gariki market is a local goods market with many shops, kiosks, roadside sellers, hawkers, etc. In this market, you will find people selling products like perishable goods, foodstuffs, fashion items, etc.

This is a busy market where you can find household items, local foodstuff, clothing, accessories and many more at an affordable price.
